Understanding Lymphedema

What is it and what causes it?

Lymphedema is swelling that happens when a fluid called lymph builds up in the body. This can happen if the tiny tubes or glands (called lymph vessels and lymph nodes) that move the fluid stop working properly.

Lymphedema can be caused by things like infections, cancer, radiation, or surgery that removes lymph nodes. It can start soon after these treatments or even years later. Some people are born with it, and it can also be linked to being overweight.

Symptoms

Swelling in an arm, leg, the chest, neck or groin

Feeling of heaviness, skin tightness or weakness in the affected limb

Difficulty with clothes fitting

Infections

Skin changes

Difficulty performing daily activities

How is it treated?

Complete Decongestive Therapy, or CDT, is a safe and gentle way to treat lymphedema. It is done by trained medical professionals and works best when you follow all the steps. Many people see good results with this treatment. CDT has four parts:

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): This is a soft, gentle type of massage. It helps move trapped fluid out of swollen areas and back into the body’s normal flow. When done regularly with the other steps, it helps reduce swelling.

Compression Therapy: A trained therapist wraps the swollen area with special bandages that are worn day and night. These wraps help stop more fluid from building up and support your muscles and skin. When swelling goes down, your therapist will help you pick a special compression sock or sleeve to wear each day. Some people may need one to wear at night too.

Exercise: Your therapist will create a simple exercise plan for you. These movements help push the fluid out of the swollen area. You’ll do them while wearing the bandages or compression garment.

Skin and Nail Care: People with lymphedema often have dry skin, which can lead to infection. Your therapist will show you how to gently clean and care for your skin and nails. A special lotion is used to keep the skin healthy.

Our Services

Lymphedema Treatment

Lymphedema treatment focuses on reducing swelling, improving lymphatic flow, and managing symptoms to enhance quality of life. I provide a comprehensive approach to lymphedema management, including manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) using the Vodder Technique, compression therapy, and tailored exercise programs. My goal is to empower patients with strategies that promote ongoing wellness, reduce discomfort, and prevent complications.

Wound Care

Lymphedema can significantly impact skin integrity, making individuals more prone to developing wounds, infections, and other complications. Proper wound care is essential for managing lymphedema-related skin issues and promoting healing. Our approach includes advanced wound management techniques, proper dressing selection, and patient education to prevent infection and promote tissue regeneration.

Oncology Rehabilitation

Oncology lymphedema rehabilitation is a specialized area of care that manages and alleviates the swelling and discomfort resulting from cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. After cancer treatment, many individuals experience lymphedema, a condition where lymph fluid accumulates, leading to swelling, pain, and reduced mobility. It often affects the arms, legs, or other areas of the body. We offer comprehensive oncology lymphedema rehabilitation services, combining evidence-based techniques to address the physical and emotional aspects of recovery.
